Abstract

Bintan Regency in 2020 had a population of 160,921 people, and is expected to continue to increase in the following year. The increase in population in the Bintan Regency area will have an impact on the increase in the need for land for the development of residential areas. The increase in population is not in line with the limited availability of land. Unplanned development of residential areas can result in land conversion and land and environmental damage. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have an important role in conducting spatial studies on locations for the development of residential areas in Bintan Regency. This study is to examine the spatial accessibility of residential area development locations to the road network in Bintan Regency. The road network used is limited to arterial and collector roads. The road network parameters are subjected to a buffer process to determine the distance of the residential area to the road network. The results of spatial analysis show that the distance of residential areas to the road network is divided into 5 classes, namely 17,969 ha of very close areas (0-500 m), 15,060 ha of close areas (500 - 1000 m), 12,891 ha of medium areas (1000 - 1500 m), 10,976 ha of far areas (1500 - 2000 m), and 46,443 ha of very far areas (≥ 2000 m). Based on the distance class of residential areas to the road network, most residential areas have a very long distance to the main road network.
